Day 27 of 60 · What He said He was

The Way And The Truth

Open your Bible and read John 14:1-11

“I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

John 14:6 · ESV

This gets quoted at people like a weapon. Read where it actually comes from. His friends are frightened, he has just told them he is leaving, and Thomas says out loud that they have no idea where he is going or how to get there.

It is an answer to scared people who admitted they were lost. That is a different tone than the one you have probably heard it in.

The claim itself does not get softer for that. He does not say he knows the way or teaches the way. He says he is it. There is no reading of the sentence that makes it modest.

Sit with how odd that is. Every other founder pointed away from himself toward a path or a book or a practice. This one pointed at himself and told them not to be afraid.

Do this today

Ask a Christian you actually know how they would say this verse to a friend of another faith.

An honest thing to say to God

“If there is one way, I would rather find it than feel good about searching.”
