Communion and relationship with God. That's what this is. He created you! He knows you better than you know yourself, and you were born to interact with the God of the universe.
Most people never get told the next part, so here it is plainly. Your purpose is to step into a priestly role and minister to God FIRST. Before the requests. Before the ministry. Before anything you're going to do for Him.
“But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession.”
1 Peter 2:9 · ESVThat's you. Not the pastor. You. A priest's first job was never crowd management, it was ministering to the Lord Himself.
The shift
Don't come with requests. Come to minister to HIM.
Almost everyone starts by treating God like a resource. You need something, so you pray. He invites that and He's not annoyed by it, but a relationship built entirely on requests will wear you out, because that's not a relationship, it's a transaction.
Ministering to the Lord means turning your whole attention onto Him for one reason only: He is worth it. You bring an offering of praise and worship and love. You adore Jesus. You're not there to get topped up, you're there because you love Him.
Here's the beautiful part. This is also where you get filled. But you can't do it in order to get filled. He knows the difference, and He's after your heart, not your technique.
“One thing have I asked of the LORD, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD.”
Psalm 27:4 · ESVBehind a shut door
Jesus assumed you'd have a room.
“But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret.”
Matthew 6:6 · ESVNot a stage. Not an audience. Not a performance. Something hidden, where nobody is impressed and nothing is being produced. That's why it's called the secret place, and that hiddenness is a feature, not a limitation.
How to start
Fifteen minutes, no agenda
You don't need a method or a curated playlist. You need to actually stop. Here's a way in.
-
Put the phone in another room
Not face down. Another room. Half the reason people find God quiet is that they've never given Him fifteen uninterrupted minutes to be heard in.
-
Start with thank you
Out loud, and specific. Thanksgiving is how you get through the gate. It does something in your heart that thinking about it never will.
-
Worship Him
Sing it to Him, don't just listen to it. Tell Him what He's like. This is the offering, and it's the part that turns a quiet time into communion.
-
Tell Him you love Him
It feels strange the first several times. Do it anyway! You're not informing Him, you're turning your affection toward Him on purpose, and affection follows attention.
-
Read a few verses slowly
A few verses, not a chapter. Try Psalm 27, Psalm 63, or John 15. Read them two or three times and stop at the phrase that catches you. Talk to Him about that phrase.
-
Then stop talking
Stay there. Don't fill it. This is the part almost everyone skips and it's the part where most people first notice Him. Silence isn't absence.
-
Come back tomorrow
Consistency beats intensity every time. Fifteen honest minutes daily will form you more than a three hour session once a month.
The part that's on you
Go after His presence.
Nobody can do this for you. Not a pastor, not a worship team, not a conference. God's presence is available to you every single day, and it is on you to engage with it and go after it.
“Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.”
James 4:8 · ESVHe's not playing hard to get. He said if you come, He comes. But somebody has to move first, and He already did that at the cross. Now it's your turn.
Honest problems
When it feels like nothing
It will sometimes, and it isn't a verdict on you.
- Your feelings are not the scoreboard. Some of the most significant time you'll ever spend with God will feel flat while you're in it. Faithfulness in a dry stretch does more in you than a dozen emotional highs.
- A wandering mind isn't rebellion. When you notice you've drifted, just come back. No penalty, no restart. Coming back is the practice.
- Don't grade it. The moment you start scoring your quiet times you've turned a Person into a performance review, and you already know how that ends.
- If guilt shows up, check who's talking. The Holy Spirit convicts you specifically and kindly, and it pulls you toward God. Shame is vague, crushing, and pushes you away from Him. They are not the same voice.
- You are righteous while you sit there. Not because the session went well. Because of the blood of Jesus. Bring that with you.
The whole point
You are not trying to get something out of God. You're getting to know Him! Everything else, the boldness, the healing, hearing His voice, the character, the courage to tell somebody about Jesus, all of it comes out of a person who has been with Him.
Where to next?
Take whichever one you want. Nothing here is in order.
