The manuscripts are the answer to that, and the answer is checkable. We have thousands of early copies in multiple languages, far more than for any other ancient text. Comparing them lets scholars, believers and skeptics alike, reconstruct the wording with high confidence. The differences are overwhelmingly spelling and word order.
Where there is a genuine question, decent Bibles print a footnote telling you so, right there on the page. That transparency is worth respecting. Nobody is hiding the seams.
None of this proves the events happened. A well preserved text can still be wrong. But it does retire the lazy version of the objection, and it means when you read the accounts you are reading what they wrote, not a rumor.
